EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- Lane County Marine Patrol Deputies spent the holiday weekend making sure boaters and floaters stay safe on the water. Deputies say they don’t see many people piloting boats under the influence, but come across a lot of folks on rivers and lakes who are not prepared with the proper safety equipment.

Deputies were called out late Thursday night to rescue a group of four floating on the McKenzie River after they got stranded on a gravel bar. Deputies were able to find the group and get them back to the river’s edge safely, but say the situation could have been avoided if the floaters had had a better plan and let others know where they would be.
