Eugene (KMTR) - Lane County will try to recoup about $4.4 million in losses resulting from the January floods. The damage estimate was released in a new report Tuesday to be used in the county’s application for disaster relief from the federal government.

The report shows 400 homes and businesses were damaged in the storms. Mapleton, the Mohawk Valley and Swisshome were the areas hardest-hit by flooding in Lane County.

Lane County’s Emergency Program Manager Linda Cook says the next step is to form joint teams between local, state and federal governments to take an in-depth look at the damage.

“It's really important people be patient but hang onto any receipts, pictures, repair work they've done,” Cook said. “It's really important for people to keep really good records right now. Just put them away in a file and hang on to those.”

If the group decides the county qualifies for a presidential disaster declaration, federal aid will start flowing in. That decision should come in the next few weeks.
