EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- A big honor is bestowed on a former Lane Community College (LCC) faculty member and World War II Medal of Honor recipient.

Monday LCC celebrated the achievements of Robert Maxwell by naming its student veterans center for him.

Maxwell taught automotive technology at Lane Community College from 1966 to 1986.

While serving in eastern France during World War II, Maxwell smothered the blast of an enemy hand grenade with his body to protect those around him.

He is the only Medal of Honor recipient living in Oregon.

LCC also surprised the 92-year-old veteran with an honorary Associate’s Degree.
