Springfield (KMTR) - A middle school teacher in Springfield has found a way to offer her students a unique opportunity. She's created an entire class to teach kids how to play the keyboard and she did it largely by reaching into her own pocket.

Nadine Zollner teaches a class in playing keyboard instruments at Agnes Stewart Middle School. Playing piano and keyboards has always been a passion of Zollner's, so she created a class where students can spend an entire semester learning to play.

Money for the keyboards was not in the school budget, but offering students this opportunity was so important to Nadine Zollner that she used her own money to buy 18 of them.

“This is a great age to be playing an instrument like this and it's not done a lot,” Zollner said. “And so, I thought I'm just going to invent, and with the support of my husband, buy some keyboards; buy some new ones, some used ones - I love Craigslist - borrowed a couple from Riverbend Elementary School and put them all together. Some of us have to share but that's just how it is until I can get some more as I build this up.”

The class currently has 29 students, and as she mentioned, some of the students have to double up.

Anyone who may have a keyboard that is no longer being used is welcome to donate it by contacting Agnes Stewart Middle School.
