COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (KMTR) -- Crews started tearing down the old Oregon Meat Cutting School on 7th and Whiteaker Saturday. City leaders had hoped to develop the building that has been vacant for decades.

The Cottage Grove Community Development Corporation along with the property owner Jerry Gates helped get the building torn down. Gates bought the property in 1989 with a plan to expand his meat business. But the building had too many problems, so he moved on.

"It's good for the city. I mean, something will happen here. it's better than what it was," he told NewsSource 16.

The future of the site is still in the air, but many are hopeful as Gates has the property on the market. The building will likely be  torn down by the end of the weekend with material cleanup continuing after that.
