EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) - Three Eugene Police employees are being investigated after evidence and property turned up unaccounted for at the department's Property Control Unit.

An external audit reveals more than 1100 items are missing, including drugs, guns, money and jewelry.

Police Chief Pete Kerns said Wednesday an Internal Affairs investigation was launched last week to see if policy was violated; that could take a few months. Oregon State Police are also conducting a criminal investigation.

Chief Kerns said the department is now focused on getting its Property Crimes Unit back in order and up to national standards.

Although I find it once again poor planning for local economic growth that the police had to find an agency out of the state to run the audit, perhaps the lane county commissioners should do the same for the sheriffs office?
