ROSEBURG, Ore. (KMTR) -- Every child seat is different, for every car and for every child, making it very easy to make a mistake.

There will be a free clinic in Roseburg Friday, September 21, where representatives from the Roseburg Police Department, Douglas County Fire District #2, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and others will be on hand to help.

One tip ODOT wants to share with parents is the importance of the top tether strap on car seats.

“All car seats are manufactured with a top tether; it comes out the top of the seat,” says Rosalee Senger, Transportation Safety Coordinator of ODOT. “We really want to encourage and increase the use of those in Oregon. Because in a crash, it reduces the head excursion which cause the severe neck and spinal cord injuries.”

Roseburg's clinic will be from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM Friday, at Clint Newell Motors on NE Stephens. You can have your car seat checked out and ask questions. There will even be a few car seats available for low-income families who qualify for them.

If you can't make it to the clinic, call and make an appointment with local safety officials at anytime. They help people with car and booster seat concerns year round.
