EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon State Fire Marshal's office is reminding residents to heat their homes safely this winter, and having chimneys inspected and cleaned annually is among its list of tips.
There were almost 3,000 home heating-related fires statewide between 2004 and 2008, accounting for 12 deaths, more than 100 injuries and property losses of more than $42 million.
David Stuart Bull owns and operates the Eugene-based Jolly Good Chimney Sweeps. He says residents need to be wary of soot and creosote accumulation. Both buildups are flammable and can ignite in the chimney, a common cause of flue fires.
