Fatal car crash near Winston kills one
ROSEBURG, Ore. (KMTR) -- A Roseburg man has died after a two vehicle crash at exit 119 of Interstate 5 early Wednesday morning.
The crash happened around 8:45 a.m on the Highway 42 / Interstate 5 interchange near Winston.
Oregon State Police say 21 year-old Justin M. Burkett was driving a black, two-door, 1990 Acura Integra when he exited northbound Interstate 5. Troopers say when Burkett's car came around a sweep curve, it crossed a double-solid center line, crashing head on into another car.
Burkett was pronounced dead at the scene. Oregon State Police say he was not wearing a seatbelt.
The second car involved, a white, four-door, 1997 Nissan Altima, was driven by 25 year-old Kindall Baker of Winston. Baker was wearing a seatbelt and was transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg with non-life threatening injuries.
"Actually we do not have a lot of crashes in this particular area, especially since they've re-done this particular interchange, so this isn't a place that we'd expect to get one very often," says Lieutenant Doug Ladd of Oregon State Police, Roseburg-area Command.
The surviving driver in the crash, Kindall Baker, was treated and released from Mercy Medical Center on Wednesday, August 25th, 2010.
Oregon State Police shutdown the Highway 42 / Interstate 5 interchange for about 3-hours Wednesday morning while crews reconstructed the crash scene.
