CRESWELL (KMTR) – A Creswell couple is facing manslaughter charges in the death of their 16-year old son. The Lane County Sheriff's Office says Austin Sprout died five days before Christmas after being sick for a week.

Investigators say his mother, Brandi Bellew, 36, and his stepfather, Russel Bellew, 39, didn't seek medical treatment, reportedly because of their religious beliefs. The exact cause and manner of Austin's death are not being released, but medical professionals say his condition was highly treatable.

The funny thing about these people is that they were probably given all sorts of vaccines and medicines throughout their childhood and early adult life. They think that their prayer keeps them well, but it's the foundation of preventative medicine that kept them healthy. I'm not giving all my faith to western, or eastern, medicine as the cure for disease. I think that diet is number one, along with positive thoughts and actions. If those three things are not sufficient to cure the problem, then of course a person should be given medical treatment. Especially a minor!! If anything they should get negligence added to their charges.

The real problem with religious fundamentalists of ALL kinds is NOT that they choose to base their lives on magical thinking and a magic man in the sky who controls all. No, the real problem is that almost all of them want to force their beliefs on others. If you are an adult and want to believe that an invisible guy (or his magical son) will cure you if you just ask hard enough, fine. But you DO NOT have the right to force that belief on others -- including your minor children, perhaps killing them in the process. And really, these folks are not all that different from those "good" Christians and Muslims (and others) who want to keep women in a certain (God-Specified) role, prevent some folks who love each other from getting married, and tell women what they can do with their bodies. Christopher Hitchens is right on.

I believe Family Guy said it best when they pointed out," You pray for a cure, but when God answers your prayers by giving you a medicine to cure what ails you - you turn your nose up at it."

Throw the book at these two. When are these "religion's" going to learn that you are going to be in trouble if you withold medical treatment on anybody, Yes prayer does help but you must also see a doctor if the problem stick's around.
