EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- A change in leadership in the city of Eugene on Wednesday, ahead of the November election and candidates taking office in January.
Councilor Claire Syrett was officially sworn-in to council on Wednesday, October 31st, 2012, replacing former councilor Andrea Ortiz.
Syrett will represent city council ward 7, which covers the Whiteaker, Bethel and Trainsong neighborhoods, also most of River Road and some of Santa Clara.
Syrett is the executive director the Lane Coalition for Healthy Active Youth. She also sits on Lane County’s Human Services Commission. Syrett says issues of homelessness and helping impoverished families in need.
"Personally I do need to do some work getting to know folks in the Trainsong area and River Road and Santa Clara, I've started to do to some of that work and find out what their concerns are. I know we have some unpaved streets in Trainsong and unpaved sidewalks, and I'd like to see some enhancements there, so folks can get outside and enjoy their community in a safe way,” said Syrett in an interview with NewsSource 16 on Wednesday.
Syrett will fill the rest of Andrew Ortiz’s term, through January 2013. Ortiz stepped down early due to work and family commitments.
Syrett is also running unopposed on this November 2012 ballot, for a four year term.
