the yarn is not wasted, it is waste yarn, meaning left over scraps from previous projects, generally too small do do much else with. it is also mostly acrylic yarn so it weathers very well. traffic hazard? it is a pedestrian bridge! as for who takes it down when it does turn ugly, the group does, just like the fence across from the library, at least what pieces are left as many are taken before that. this was part of an international event btw.

@ ohboy11 & ambird27 - Actually - we monitor the installation to make sure things stay neat and after a while we remove what people haven't stolen. Relax... It's just for fun. I'm sorry about your balloons, because it sounds like someone popped yours once.

@ ohboy11 & ambird27: Why are you being such haters? Have you seen the bridge, or even watched the video clip? The yarn is knitted on somehow, not just thrown around. I think it looks really nice. As for issues with it getting wet, it would be no different than wearing a sweater in the rain. To address the "waste of yarn", I know someone from this group knitted a bunch of hats for babies in the N.I.C.U. at Sacred Heart because we got one. Lastly, when I was out there Sat. evening, there were no traffic hazzard, just folks enjoying the novelty. This kind of thing isn't for everybody I guess, but it sure puts a smile on my face. Thank you Knotty Knitters!

Just thought I would provide an additional perspective to this story as well. Taking a look at the pictures (on the blog) of some of the yarn creations that the group hung up, while I was out there getting video of the story, I found that some of the creations that were originally hung on the bridge were actually missing. Point being, many people passing by like these creations enough to take them home with them. So there's that part.

ohboy11 is right. If anyone else did this type of littering and vandalism they would have to pay a fine and clean it up. Who is going to cut all of this wasted yarn down after this rain lets up and it is just wet gobs disfiguring a public bridge? All of that yarn could have been used to make sweaters, scarfs, etc for people at the Mission or on the street. What a waste!

Hmmm, Adding color? I wonder what Grafftie artist think about this, not to mention the traffic hazzard and distraction. Gee, I think they should at least have to pay a FEE! Car Dealers can't put up Balloons (THAT ADD COLOR)with out being fined, so there you go, String all those cars and buildings with Yarn! give me a break!!!!!
