If you want to know what a prescription drug is going to do once you take it, ask a pharmacist not a doctor. Pharmacists are very knowledgeable about what drugs do in the body, much more so than doctors. Doctors often prescribe drugs without really knowing the full range of possible effects once taken, and they almost never share that information with the patient (or caregiver). The knowledge possessed by most doctors of what drugs will do in the body is limited to what the pharmaceutical industry tells them. Pharmacology is not a priority in most medical school programs. It’s always prudent to discuss in detail your prescriptions with both your doctor and a pharmacist to be sure you’re getting what you need with a minimum of risk.
