EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) - Starting Monday, Eugene Police will take part in a statewide traffic blitz.
The event is called the 3-Flags Traffic Safety Campaign and the idea is to reduce the number of deadly crashes by increasing public awareness.
The three most common reasons for car crashes are failure to use safety restraints, speeding and impaired drivers.
Though officers patrol year-round, during the campaign federal money allows them to spend overtime for a two-week period of intensive, high-visibility enforcement.
“It's very simple: seat belts save lives. And when people don't use their seat belts, even minor accidents can sometimes turn into fatal accidents,” says Lieutenant Doug Mozan with the Eugene Police Department (EPD). “There's a handful of people that still either forget or choose not to wear their seat belts. Those are the people we’re going to be looking for.”
Police will also be focusing on child safety seat use, making sure people are not only using car seats but that they're using them correctly.

Again, the 3-Flags campaign starts Monday and runs through Sunday, February 24. And it’s not just EPD: law enforcement agencies from all over the state will have extra eyes on the road too.
