EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- With the Eugene Police Department in a new building on Country Club Road, City Hall is almost entirely vacant but the decision as to what will happen to the building remains up in the air.

Only two offices remain in Eugene City Hall now, including the Eugene City Manager's office and the Mayor's offices. However, the property at 7th Avenue and Pearl Street should be cleared out completely in the next week.

The remaining tenants should complete a move out of City Hall by the end of the week of August 19, 2012. Both the City Manager's Office and Mayor's offices will head across the street into vacant space in the Lane County Public Service Building. The city offices will take up space that used to be occupied by the county's Health and Human Services Department, that moved to 7h Avenue and Charnelton Street a few years ago.

Throughout the month of August, Eugene City Council has been on summer recess. When councilors return, they will begin making the decision about the future of City Hall's location and the current 60s-era building.

Ideas include a total rebuild, a remodel or a move.

"There's been some conversation about is there an option with the EWEB administration building as well, so we'll be bringing that back to city council, having some really great conversations - hopefully they'll make a decision soon and then we'll get at that one like we've gotten at this one as well,” says Jon Ruiz, Eugene's City Manager.

Mayor Kitty Piercy has said she hopes to have an official Eugene City Hall back open sometime in 2014.

Until then, Eugene City Council meetings will be held in Harris Hall at the Lane County Public Service Building or the Eugene Public Library when the space is unavailable.

Z, the city of Eugene has had a plan all along. The plan goes back to before Eugene rate payers paid through the nose for a new EWEB facility. (no collusion there) Mark my words, 20 million dollars of renovations later and telling us how much money they saved, the new city hall will be the "old" EWEB building.

Girl Named Z, didn't you hear, the building they were in would not stand a 6.5 earthquake which might occur in the next 10,000 years.

I live in Springfield, so I'm not fully in 'the know', but it seems to me that maybe they should have had "a plan" before vacating the existing "already paid for" building and moving out into places they have to rent, lease, etc. It seems kind of like a family of 4 with a new baby saying "well our house is too small for our family, so let's move out of our house and into individual hotel rooms, and then we'll decide whether we should sell the house and move to a new house, or demolish and rebuild our old house. Seems like the kind of decision that should be made before you start renting temporary digs.. so as to minimize the amount of time you're paying rent? Was there some reason that they HAD to vacate immediately? Was the building condemned or something?

No that makes too much sense to use the old federal building. And hopefully Kitty won't be around in 2014.

How about the old federal building across the street from city hall? It's close to the action downtown
