Coos Bay (KMTR) – A lot of kids in Coos County have just received a big gift for the holidays. It will make it possible for the Coos Bay Elks to help hungry kids on the coast for another year.

The group received its fourth $10,000 grant from the National Elks Foundation. The money will fund nutritious snack packs for elementary school students, so they will have food on the weekends when no school lunches are available. The Elks Club has played a big part in helping the program grow.

“We also help pack all of the packs up and down the coast.  They deliver them from Reedsport, all the way down to Brookings,” says Elaine Smith of the Coos Bay Elks. “We started out with about 150, and how we're up over 700 per week.”

The local elks have already raised $10,000 to put away for next year, since this is the last year they are eligible for the national grants.
