Eugene (KMTR) - A Eugene School District 4J staff member has been arrested on charges of stealing more than fifteen thousand dollars from the district.

Police say 58 year old Cynthia Jo Oberfoell of Springfield was taken into custody for theft of funds taken throughout last year from Edgewood Elementary

On February 10th, investigators learned from school district staff that Oberfoell had committed extensive theft from school funds including student body funds throughout 2011.

Oberfoell was employed as the secretary at Edgewood Community Elementary School.

She is charged with nine counts of Theft in the First Degree, one count of Aggravated Identity Theft, and one count of Forgery in the First Degree.

Investigators say during their investigation they discovered extensive documentation indicating Oberfoell had made numerous purchases throughout the year for her sole benefit using checks from the school's accounts and the school district's credit card.

According to police, Oberfoell utilized her access to a signature stamp to forge authorization for checks drawn on school accounts, in addition to unauthorized charges on the school districts VISA card for personal purchases.

The estimated amount of theft that began in January of 2011 totals more than $15,000.

At the time of Oberfoell's arrest detectives seized two sewing machines from her home that were purchased with stolen funds.

This too me is crazy. You get a school district job that most likely won't lay you off and you steal to buy sewing machines. As an administrative professional this is just stupid in my book. At least maybe someone who deserves the job will be able to find steady work.
