Coos Bay (KMTR) – A south coast landmark will celebrate a big anniversary this weekend.

The Egyptian Theater in Coos Bay made its debut as a palatial movie theater in 1925. The City of Coos Bay bought the building in 2005, and now volunteers run it as a non-profit organization.

Board members of the Egyptian Theatre Preservation Association say community support keeps the theater alive.

Rick Shearer says he and his fellow board members hope for a big turnout for the weekend birthday bash.

“There are very few historic theaters left, and for this town to have a 1925 movie theater is pretty incredible,” Shearer says.

The Egyptian's 85th Anniversary Extravaganza begins with a free show Friday night at 7 p.m. as an organist accompanies a silent film. On Saturday, admission is $5 for a celebration that starts at 6 p.m. with a live variety show featuring local performers.

The saddest thing done to the Egyptian was to cut it up into multiple screens by Coming Attractions Theatres the former owner. I can't tell from the video if that's changed but I hope so. Good luck Coos Bay. With proper management it could become the showplace of the south coast. Bob Allen
