Blue River (KMTR) - The driver of a pick up truck hit a rock wall and crashed on the McKenzie highway between Vida and Blue River early Monday morning.
The 911 calls came in around 2:50 a.m. The highway was closed for at least two hours.
Oregon state troopers say the pick up was eastbound when it suddenly hit the wall. The driver was thrown from the truck and then pinned beneath the rear axle. Rescuers had to free him, load him in an ambulance and rush him to Leaburg where a Life Flight helicopter was waiting to fly him to the emergency room. Power lines and heavy fog kept the helicopter from landing at the actual crash scene.
Trooper William Ulch says there were apparently no witnesses to the crash.
“There was a truck driver who pulled up on scene. Luckily, he got glimpse of something because the lights in the [pickup] truck weren't on. He caught some glimpse of something that made him slow down," said Trooper Ulch.
Investigators say high speed likely played a role in the crash. They are trying to find out how the truck ended up on top of the driver.
