VENETA, Ore. (KMTR) -- A volunteer effort organized by two local Boy Scouts is helping fix up a Lane County park near Veneta.

Future Eagle Scouts from Troop 61 of Eugene and Troop 577 of Santa Clara helped rebuild picnic benches in Zumwalt Park on Saturday, September 22. The Scouts’ respective troops have been working on the project for the last several weeks.

Adam Forrester and Rhett Stanley helped organize the work for their Eagle Scout projects. Together, they’ve replaced the wood for both tables and seats making up the bench.

"The tables were in horrible shape. No one could use them. No one could even just come here and have a picnic, they were just so rotten down,” says Rhett Stanley, a future Eagle Scout.

Without the work, the benches likely wouldn’t have been replaced. The scouts also cut out the grass under the picnic benches to help keep the weeds down and off people’s legs.

"Keep a nice area for picnickers and dog walkers out here to enjoy themselves,” says Adam Forrester, another future Eagle Scout.

Additionally, Rhett Stanley’s troop helped install several wheelchair-accessible tables in the park, which is a first.

Another Scout group is also now considering working on the fire pits at the park.
