EUGENE (KMTR) – Hundreds of people started tailgating Thursday morning across the street from Autzen Stadium.

JD Dietz, of Brownsville, came out with his cousin.  They started tailgating around 9:00 AM, so it was definitely a long day.  They park in the same spot during every home game.  They grill out, eat good food, listen to music and just hang out with the family by the fire.  JD says it's a full day event with game day starting at 12:01 AM and not ending until the next day.

The tailgating and parking situation is also good business for the Eugene Masonic Lodge.  That's where JD and hundreds of others park and tailgate.  The lodge says it's a fundraiser not only to help operate the building, but also provide charity to community organizations and give out scholarships to local high schools.  With 500 parking spots at $40 dollars a piece, a full lot means $20,000 dollars of extra money to help those in need.

Are you serious Ricky? Clearly you are either a Husky or a Beaver, as every rational Duck fan knows they have no sense of humor, no ability to have a good time and clearly no comprehension of a charitable act. I, a Duck fan, have all 3. We laugh, we have fun with friends and family and we are able to give to others without thought of self promotion. In fact, us Duck fans can do all these things, be ranked #1 and have the common sense to not drink and drive. Personal responsibility escapes you if you are not able to make the same wise decisions as us! Pity..... Regardless, I will speak on behalf of all Duck fans and wish you a happy game day while you are sitting at home, in your plastic wrapped couch, eating granola and listening to the Beavers and Huskies on am radio as they are not on TV.

It’s interesting that this article is written portraying this activity as a good and wonderful thing. Let’s rewrite the article as it should be written. ---The Masonic lodge is making it possible for 500 people who have been drinking and partying for hours and hours to stumble or crawl into their cars and trucks and drive under the influence home. In return they are making $20,000 per event. They defend this by saying that “extra money to help those in need”.--- If just one of those 500 drunken tailgaters blows a red light and broadsides a minivan full of kids, would $20,000 be worth it then? Let’s just make it simple. Still provide the parking spaces, but no alcohol of any kind will be allowed. But let’s be realistic, a LOT of the so called fans would not then come and the Masons would not then make the $20,000 per event. Because it’s really NOT about the game, it’s all about getting drunk with your buddies. The Eugene Police should set up sobriety checkpoints and confiscate every vehicle driven by an under the influence driver leaving the area. But they won’t. The local businesses are making to much money from this activity. Where is MADD???
