EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- Free admission to watch the Oregon Ducks play their annual spring football scrimmage gave fans a chance to turn their attention to helping others. FOOD for Lane County (FFLC) collected canned food at Autzen Stadium’s gates on Saturday, April 28, 2012.

Each fan attending was encouraged to bring three cans of food or make a donation. FFLC estimates it collected nearly 70,000 pounds of food, enough for about 55,000 meals.

“39% of the county right now is eligible for food assistance and that translates to about 133,000 people that their income is low enough that they can come and get emergency assistance from us. So yeah, the 55,000 meals will be a big help,” says Alicia Hines, Food Resource Developer for FOOD for Lane County

FOOD for Lane County is still looking for donations, particularly protein - foods like beans, chili, canned meats and nuts.

Along with FOOD for Lane County, the Ducks football team and O Heroes program also took opportunity of the event to honor Officer Chris Kilcullen and present the memorial scholarship fthat has been named in his honor.

Through its recently-held second annual bowling tournament, the Ducks raised thousands of dollars for the Officer Chris Kilcullen Memorial Scholarship Fund. Coach Chip Kelly presented a check for $9,000 to representatives of the Kilcullen family and the Memorial Fund during the game Saturday.

The Fund will help local Eugene-Springfield area college students attend either the University of Oregon or Northwest Christian University. The first two recipients of the scholarship were recently announced and featured on NewsSource 16.
