Springfield (KMTR) - Injured Lane County Sheriff's Office Deputy Drew Wattier has arrived at a long term care facility in Portland.
A family spokesperson says the move was done with a combination of air and ground ambulance support, and is a result of the great progress he has made in the days since he and his wife Michelle were hit by a vehicle at high speed in Mexico.
They say Drew is not yet awake, but, he is making what appear to be deliberate body movements and occasionally opens his eyes. The family has been told these are good signs, but that he has a long road of rehabilitation and recovery ahead of him.
Family and friends are hopeful that Michelle will follow him to a facility closer to home in the coming weeks. For now, she will remain at U.C. San Diego Medical Center where she is also making progress. Michelle is awake, and is able to converse with medical staff and family. She, too, will have a lengthy rehabilitation period ahead.
Both Drew and Michelle have had family by their side almost every moment from the day of the accident on November 30th.
This has been an emotionally and financially trying time for their immediate family members. They are humbled and extremely thankful for all of the community support that has been provided in the last month.
