EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) – It’s not the kind of wake-up call one North Eugene family was asking for on Saturday morning when a drunk driver crashed into multiple cars in front of their home.
Around 3 a.m. on Saturday, March 24th, 2012, Eugene Police say a man driving a car crashed into four cars on North Clarey Road in the Barger area of Eugene.
One of those cars belongs to Sami Bean, who was inside her home when it happened. Bean says she heard a loud thud. When she looked outside, she saw a Dodge Durango SUV on its side in the middle of the road.
Bean says the SUV crashed into her car, her boyfriend’s car and her parents' cars in front of her home.
“My daughter and her boyfriend came home and they no more than got in the front door and that's when it happened,” says Dick Beemer, whose car was damaged in the crash.
A neighbor, who saw the whole thing happen, helped the male driver out to make sure he was okay. However, as soon as the driver got up, he ran down the street to his home just a few doors down.
Eugene Police eventually caught up with the driver and arrested him.
Sami says the damage to her car and her parents’ cars is in the thousands.
“It was really scary, coming out, seeing a car completely on its side. I didn't know if there was somebody still inside of it, we didn't know, what was going on, really. And then to see the damage, like I said, that it did to our cars was . . . That's when we realized how serious it actually was,” says Sami.
Eugene Police arrested 38-year-old Daniel Liebl in the crash. According to EPD, he’s charged with DUII, reckless driving, leaving the scene of a crash and driving uninsured.
