Eugene (KMTR) - The "Crude Awakening Event", is an effort by University of Oregon students to awaken others to the effects of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

In one of the busiest foot traffic areas on campus, the group hopes the live music and pictures of dead wildlife will bring awareness to the environmental impact of the spill.  To bring the spill closer to home, the students re-created the oil spill through a visual demonstration.

And despite living thousands of miles away, these students are passionate.  They say the impact of the spill will be felt by everyone in America, for decades to come.

"It's been going on for a month, and it could go on for months more," said Charles Denson, OSPRIG member.  "The impact will be huge on every one, including ecosystems, on people's way of life and fishermen. Everything that is going on there will be completely changed."

To help prevent future spills, the group is calling on the Obama administration.  And today the group asked the student body to take action by signing a petition to Obama, to reinstate the moratorium on offshore oil drilling along the coast.

Great article. I would just like to add that this event was put together by a coalition including Climate Justice League, Coalition Against Environemental Racism, Mark Costigen, and OSPIRG. Charles Denson
