COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (KMTR) -- The long awaited “gateway arch” is now finally standing tall in downtown Cottage Grove.

After crews erected the arch earlier in the week, Saturday, March 17th, 2012, the city took to celebrating the arch with an official ribbon cutting to ring in the weekend.

The arch sits at the mouth of Main Street and the city’s historic district.

City leaders have been waiting for years to get the arch going. Several decades ago, the idea first came up.

Finally, in 2011, Cottage Grove’s Chamber of Commerce held a meeting with downtown businesses on what they wanted to accomplish in the area. The undying arch came up again, and this time, it found physical life.

Downtown businesses hope that the arch stands out to attract new customers in to the downtown.

By the end of the year, crews hope to put lights on the arch.
