Eugene (KMTR) - It's bigger, cleaner and better.
Catholic Community Services of Lane County is now working out of a new facility in west Eugene. The move to 1464 West Sixth Avenue was a must, in order for the charity to better serve the increasing number of hungry, and low income people in the community.
Although they help people find permanent housing and utility and prescription assistance, much of what they do is help feed hungry people when they are out of options.
Last year alone, CCS distributed 1.6 million pounds of food between it's Eugene, and Springfield buildings—that’s eight tons per week.
Assistant Executive Director Stephanie Talbott says the new building has room for people to wait and plenty of storage space.
“Just because people may be down on their luck doesn't mean they don't deserve a place that is really warm, and welcoming and pretty,” says Talbott.
John Gaudenti, a student at Lane Community College, says he’s grateful for the help: “With the holidays coming around, we're tight with money, and we just really don’t have enough to go around, so this is just really amazing.”
Catholic Community Services is kicking off a $1.5 million fundraising campaign to help pay for the building and other operating expenses. So far, they have raised about a fifth of that amount.
