Eugene (KMTR) - Demand is up this winter at the local warming center for homeless people. More volunteers are needed to help run it on freezing nights.
The Egan Warming Center is operated by St. Vincent DePaul Society which opens it to those in need when temperatures drop below 28 degrees. But this year, there have been more cold nights than expected.
“We thought about 20 to 25 days historically,” Said Charlie Harvey of St. Vincent DePaul, “and so, right off the bat, I think we had nine days in a row. And that was before winter technically started."
Organizers ask people who wish to volunteer to attend a basic training and orientation session. The next sessions are January 5th and January 8th.
