Creswell (KMTR) – People in the Creswell community are stepping up to help a local Boy Scout troop that was victimized by burglars.

Boy Scout Troup 28 in Creswell tries to live by their motto, “Be Prepared.”  But nothing could prepare them for this.

The boys have been fundraising for years to take a summer trip to Yellowstone National Park.  They collected 36 bags of recyclables at a recent town-wide recycling drive. But sometime between Saturday and Wednesday, all but six of those bags were stolen from Scoutmaster Markk McNelly's house in Creswell.

Each bag had between $20 and $30 in recyclables, so they're out about $700.  That’s a big loss, considering they were halfway to their trip goal of $7,000.

Boy Scout Zach Foster said, “We're a small community and it's hard to think that someone would to that to us.”

His scoutmaster agrees, “They stole from a bunch of boys that are anywhere from age 11 to age 17, and they stole what those boys had worked for.”

The scouts filed a police report and notified stores in the area that take recycling.

Meantime, they have two more can drives planned; the day after New Years and close to the Super Bowl.

After we first aired this story Wednesday on NewsSource 16, one viewer has called in and offered $50 to help the troop challenging other viewers to do the same.  Another viewer man says he will donate his large collection of cans and bottles to the troop.
