EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- Thousands of people are flocking to the Lane County Fairgrounds this weekend to celebrate the far east. The 27th annual “Asian Celebration” kicked off Saturday, February 18th, 2012, at the Lane Events Center.
The festival is a mixture of more than a dozen Asian cultures, showcasing martial arts, food, music, dance, hands on activities and more.
2012's theme is “the future is in your hands.”
Organizers hope that theme reaches all aspects of the celebration, from the “going green” element of the celebration with more recycling efforts in the food court, to teaching the next generation.
Much of the celebration is geared towards teaching the next generation. Organizers hope that the future can embrace respect of Asian culture, which continues to grow in Oregon.
“We're here to open minds and ideas and say 'hey listen, we can do anything else you can do.'” says David Tam, co-chair of the Asian Celebration.
“Don't stereotype, don't put labels on anything, you know? Be open minded and come and learn and understand our people. That's celebration is really about is an opportunity to share who we are a a culture, as a people, and our different tastes and lifestyles,” says Tam.
The celebration continues on Sunday, from 10 a.m. To 7 p.m. For more information, visit the Asian Celebration's website at the following link: http://www.asiancelebration.org/.
