Eugene (KMTR) – Today dozens gathered at the Eugene Airport to honor a soldier killed in Afghanistan.

Sergeant Joshua Lengstorf’s body arrived from Delaware this afternoon. Snow on the east coast caused a delay in the flight – which was supposed to arrive at noon.

Just after 1:30 p.m. – his plane arrived.

An American flag covered the casket as it was slowly lowered and carefully place inside a waiting hearse.

Family and friends – including Lengstorf’s wife and child – watched from just a few feet away.

Members of the Patriot Guard lined up, waiting to honor and escort home the fallen hero.

“We need to let the public know that there are men and women out there that are giving their lives or put their lives on the line every day for our freedom. We're out here to make sure they know we appreciate it,” said William Vaughan, a Patriot Guard rider.

A public memorial will be held Saturday, January 16th at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. It starts at 11 a.m.

All do respect to Josh and his family...too bad he and thousands have had to make the ultimate sacrifice for a BOGUS cause...are we really in danger from Afghanis, Iraquis, Somalies, etc, etc, etc!!! I am sick to death of having to grieve the loss of yet another American soldier in the name of "THE FIGHT AGAINST TERRORISM" Come on MOMS AND DADS! these are your children who have been brainwashed into thinking that going "over there" is somehow protecting our country from a bunch of religious fanatics...nothing could be further from the truth! Our men and women are fighting for the OIL!!! they are to give an excuse to the war machine to continue to not only develop weapons, but for our right to use them...BIG money to be made here no doubt!!!! oh...but for us, but for U.S. and no that does not translate into a better life for U.N.ME...only the rich benefit from this poor lads death(sacrifice). I am so fed up with the crap spoonfed to us by the media...I have to be here to be heard, and I hate it, but I cannot go to my grave knowing that I could have said something, and chose not to, because I am fed up! Everything in the war against terror to this point smacks of American greed and the need to control the world and not for your benifit or mine...please somebody out there, tell me it ain't so...in an intellectual manner that makes sense...Quotes from the government...useless...speak to me in your own words...Dave

My heart is saddened for Sergeant Joshua Lengstorf’s family and friends. At the same time my heart is so full of pride that a young man put his life on the line to protect people he did not even know. For that I will be eternally grateful to Joshua Lengstorf and all soldiers that stand between us and any potential threat to our country. Respectfull, grateful and full of love. Nancy R. Unto the lord I have been called, My time here has been served. Unto the lord I go, for he called my name. Seek me, oh child of mine, I have new work for you this day. For all his glory, I have served him well. Now my time comes, to serve him once more. Please, rejoice my life for I am dancing to a new beat. Each morning, as I rise the his hand warms my soul, My heart is full and my love is endless. For it is within you, that I cherished the most. Reach out and warm a neighbor, my heart overflows. Share a hug, see me smile. For now I know I have served well.
