ROSEBURG, Ore. (KMTR) -- As service people were recognized across the nation Tuesday, one organization picked the perfect day to show their gratitude.
About a year and a half ago, Darryl Fisher decided he wanted to give back to those who have given. Growing up around airplanes and the senior housing business, Fisher and his wife put the two ideas together and started the Ageless Aviation Dreams foundation.
Fisher is a pilot and, with the help of sponsors, he travels all around the country giving seniors and veterans the flight of a lifetime.
“(For) most of these folks, I'm giving them their last ride,” says Fisher. “At the same time, I'm giving them recognition for their service to the country and it's a very emotional thing.”
The event today was sponsored by Pacific Air Comfort.
Fisher has done over one hundred flights with seniors in 25 states. He doesn't plan on stopping any time soon; when asked whether he plans to continue his flights, Fisher seemed more than certain.
“It is the most powerful thing, it is the most rich and rewarding thing I've ever done. I have to,” says Fisher.
He already has plans to bring flights to the northeastern United States next year.
Fisher's father is from Roseburg and asked him if he could bring some flights to the area. After talking more, they decided September 11th would be the perfect day to pay tribute.
Today fisher made over ten flights with different local veterans.
