EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) – A chance on Sunday for some of Oregon’s youngest writers to debut their work to the public in Eugene.
Sunday, April 3rd, 2011, the Young Writers Association held one of its public readings, with 6th graders getting the chance to share their written stories to parents, teachers and other students with ties to Eugene’s Roosevelt Middle School.
Andrea Corbin is a young writer herself and helped craft a story titled, “Ravens End.” Kelly Terwilliger is a local author who worked the students for several weeks and also helped Corbin with her tale.
“She was really confident so that helped me be confident and she pointed out like, different ways to separate parts of your story, and make it better,” Corbin said.
The program’s mission to encourage students to be more involved in reading and writing. It is a nonprofit organization funded by the Lane County Cultural Coalition.
Later this month, the YWA will hold another event, this time at the Eugene Public Library. There will be a reception in the morning where YWA’s winners in creative writing will be acknowledged, and afterward, a luncheon reception. Midday, kids and teens will visit Oregon Poet Laureate Paulann Peterson in an intergenerational writing workshop. There are a number of events even further into the day.
The next Young Writers event happens April 30th, 2011 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Eugene Public Library.
