Eugene (KMTR) – 4J school district’s superintendent says despite a tough few years battling the budget, things are improving and programs are coming back.  Dr. Sheldon Berman visited kids at several schools on their first day.  He says P.E. and music are back in all elementary schools this year.  As for the budget, there will still be some furlough days, but Berman says things are better this September than they have been for a while.  He explains, "At least we're able to start the year without the kinds of trauma that's happened with school closings and layoff of staff.  And so we're very excited to have stability.”

Berman says there are several bright spots across 4J this fall; Bertha Holt has new microphone and speaker systems in every classroom to help students focus.  At Churchill, a new engineering program will take off this year thanks to grant funding.  Also, all 4J high schools are working on a transition to a common schedule.

Occupy PERS, I agree with everything you said except your sentence,(And just wait till funding doesn't support the PERS and other comp for the teachers). The funding isn't supporting PERS now, PERS is Billions in the red, and getting worse daily. The unions continue to refuse to have public employees pay for any of their own retirement. When you figure the 6 percent pickup, and the debt payment on PERS, that puts the whole system in further jeopardy every year. They will hold fast in all their wisdom until such time as the whole system is bankrupt, then it will be everyone's fault but their own. Public Schools will continue in decline, because the taxpayer has finally figured out that they don't want to pay for something they could only dream of getting.

I am so sad to see how the quality of public ed has deteriorated over the last 5 years in 4J. Having moved here from washington in 1997 for the school quality, I am now happy to say that my youngest is now enrolled in a private school that hold the students and the teachers accountable. Public services, including teachers, are more concerned with maintaining their fat comp packages then providing the service to the community that pays their wages. Eugene's parents will eventually move their kids to private systems to get the most of the formative years. Passing with straight A's in 4J is no accomplishment. Just show up and the teachers will give the grades. I have seen it for so many years. And just wait til funding doesn't support the PERS and other comp for the teachers. Then you will see again the attempt by teachers/public employees to blackmail us into paying these outrageous comp packages.
