I wish Marion county had this law,I just dealt with a sheriff because my 6yo autistic son who's black has been harassed by the 12yo neighbor. He threatens him at school and threw dog poop on him.the sheriff said he's too young to arrest.tonite he hit my son with rocks and called him the N word. The sheriff that showed up not only said thats not assault because there's no injury but that threatening my son and calling him racial slurs isn't a crime because "the first amendment protects free speech". I told him thats racial intimidation and he told me Oregon doesn't have any law dealing with racial intimidation and there's never been a law against racial slurs. My sons afraid to go to school or even play outside because this kid twice his age threatens him because he's part black.

Did anyone notice that it said the juveniles were released to their parents? What a load of crap. I don't care if they are juveniles. At their ages they knew what they were doing. Letting them out of jail is only going to teach them that they can get out of trouble. As for the 22 year old, he will end up getting out too because of the lack of funds in the jails. So expect these things to continue happening until something changes either financially with the jails, or a better judge who knows how to actually keep people in jail where they belong. I hope the boy who was assaulted is doing better. I am sure he is having a hard time after this incident.

So glad they caught these people! They tried to run him over; they could have killed him! I hope their charges are serious and they serve time for this.

No, you are wrong, Oregon does not need hate crimes. What Oregon needs is to treat everyone with dignity and respect irregardless of the color of their skin. What Oregon needs is common sense, and equal justice under the law. What Oregon does not need is people trying to drive a wedge deeper with political correctness crimes. What Oregon does not need is people trying to stir racial problems. Oregon does not need hate crimes! An assault is an assault, intimidation is intimidation, murder is murder. Criminals are criminals and if you want to make matters worse just keep driving that wedge deeper. Get some common sense please.
