CORVALLIS, Ore. -- An 11-year-old Benton County girl was injured when she was struck by a car that a 9-year-old girl was driving, a newspaper reported.

The Corvallis Gazette-Times reported the 9-year-old girl's mother was in the passenger seat and had allowed the girl to drive down their driveway in rural Alsea.

The girl panicked and lurched forward toward two 11-year-old girls standing nearby, according to the report. One of the girls got out of the way and the other was hit. She was taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital with injuries to her leg.

The driver's mother was cited for reckless endangering.

This mother should have been more than just charged with endangerment. I sincerely hope that Child Welfare Program is planning to investigate this family. No responsible parent would let their child be in control of a vehicle. Let's hope that the Child Welfare program is not too busy trying to make loving, responsible parents look bad so that they can "win" in court to pay attention to this obviously troubled family. They are supposed to always put the child's best interest first. The problem is this has not been the case in the past. There have been many families torn apart by the corruption of this program and their misuse of power. Children are taken from the only family they know, from loving homes and placed with complete strangers who may or may not actually care about them. At times no one knows how bad it is in the foster home until it is too late and a child has suffered severe trauma and/or death. Then, on the flip side there are many families that are clearly at risk and children who are abused and neglected daily and despite multiple reports for some reason these children never are taken out of harm's way. Something needs to drastically change in this system.

This is very sad for every one involved, but primarily for the two girls. I live in a rural area and I hope parents learn from this. What was she thinking letting a 9 year old drive a car? When we were children we learned to drive in the fields, not on the road. I hope both children receive the care they need to overcome this traumatic experience. I am glad the mother was charged.
