Woman dies after crashing into tree south of Salem

SALEM, Ore. -- A 20-year-old died early Saturday morning after crashing into a tree south of Salem, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said.

Sheriff's officials said Alexis Amaya, 20, of Independence, was driving west on Vitae Springs Road when she went off the roadway.

Crash investigators said the roadway was wet and it had been foggy that morning.

The driver's side of her Toyota Corolla hit a tree off the side of the road near the intersection of Belle Pond Way, officials said.

Fire personnel pronounced Amaya dead at the scene by the time sheriff's deputies arrived at around 5:30 a.m.

The sheriff's office said that no one reported seeing the crash happen and investigators have not reported an exact time of the crash.
