WALDPORT, Ore. – An 18-year-old Tidewater woman died after her car crashed down an embankment and into the Alsea River on Saturday, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said.
The crash happened along East Canal Creek Road, about seven miles east of Waldport. Deputies were called to the scene just before 5 p.m., according to Sgt. Adam Shanks.
A witness told deputies the car landed upside down in the river before it submerged. Witnesses were unable to rescue the woman because they couldn’t open the car doors underwater.
A tow truck pulled the car out of the river. Firefighters found Makala Marie Osborn dead in the car.
Investigators said Osborn was driving northbound on East Canal Creek Road when her car left the road and went down the steep embankment.
It’s unclear why Osborn’s car left the road. Investigators said they did not suspect drugs or alcohol caused the crash.
