Woman dead, 10-year-old girl injured in Philomath crash

PHILOMATH, Ore. -- A woman died and her 10-year-old passenger was taken to the hospital Friday afternoon after a crash on West Hills Road.

According to the Benton County Sheriff's Office, Kathryn Weldon, 61 of Philomath, was driving along Bailey Street with her 10-year-old relative from Las Vegas.

At around 5 p.m. Weldon turned her Honda Accord east onto West Hills Road and was hit by a westbound Ford Excursion, sheriff's officials said.

Emergency personnel pronounced Weldon dead at the scene. Her 10-year-old passenger was taken to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.

The driver of the Excursion, Katie Cornell, 33 of Philomath, was unhurt in the crash.

Sheriff Jackson said his heart goes out to the family and loved ones of those involved in this tragic crash and encourages motorist to be diligent in safe driving habits. 

Benton County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the crash which led to the closure of West Hills Road for several hours. Benton County Deputies were assisted by the Benton County Multi-Agency Crash Investigation Team, Corvallis Police Department, Philomath Police Department, Firefighters and EMT's from the Philomath Fire Department and the Corvallis Fire Department, and Benton County Public Works.
