SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Construction is about to start at Willamalane Sports and Recreation Center.

The upgrades are part of a 2012 $3.6 million bond measure approved by voters.

Upgrades are set to begin at Willamalane center on the next dry day.

Currently, there are two soccer fields on the property. But officials hope to double that space by the end of the summer.

The fields will be synthetic turf, allowing play to occur year-round.

Field lighting and permaneet seating for 500 are also part of the plan.

"We're going to expand that, put 2 more soccer fields out there and those fields will be multipurpose so we can play softball, baseball, or lacrosse on them," said Jacob Risely with Willamalane. "So we're just kind of expanding the opportunities for play out there."

Additional parking space will also be built, and  hook-up capabilities will be made for concession stands.

Work should be done by August, ready for players to hit the fields in September.
