EUGENE, Ore. -- Dozens hit the Fern Ridge Bike Trail on Saturday for the 8th Walkin’ and Rollin' event, where bikers and walkers can get a close look at the importance of West Eugene’s wetlands.
The annual event coincides with American Wetlands Month, giving people a chance to explore the natural resource while soaking up some sun.
For the past two decades the city has partnered with local groups to protect and restore the wetlands area.
City of Eugene spokesman Trevor Taylor said the wetlands play a crucial part in Eugene’s ecosystem.
“Cleaning out our water, protecting us from flooding, providing habitat for a wide variety of species that share the community with us,” said Taylor.
The city will continue to restore the wetlands with a resource management plan that ensures it stays clean.
