Long-term federal unemployment insurance expired Saturday, leaving an estimated 1.3 million Americans without benefits.


Congress will debate reinstating the benefits when lawmakers return in January. Until then the long-term unemployed will be starting this new year on a note of uncertainty.


While some consider it a lifeline, republicans question whether extending unemployment benefits beyond twenty-six weeks is a good investment.
