Store owner to would-be robbers: 'Get out of here, I'm going to kill you'

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Monday started out slow at the 35 Street Market in Springfield.

"It was a very slow day," said Bertha Bautista.

Then two Labor Day holiday customers approached the front door.

The duo looked suspicious, said Bertha Bautista, who owns the store with her husband.

"He saw two guys coming by Olympic, hiding in the corner," she said.

Her husband decided to hide in the back room and watch the men.

"After, they were hiding in the store, covering their face with a mask. He really felt something was going to happen," Bautista said. "They showed a gun and go 'this is an assault, give me the money."

Still hidden, Bautista's husband used the element of surprise.

"My husband in the corner said, 'Get out of here, I'm going to kill you,'" she said. "They got panicked and ran away. So right after, he called the police."

That attempted robbery failed, but Sgt. David Lewis said a masked robber armed with a knife got away with cash from a Dari Mart.

"He went around the counter, approached the clerk with a large knife and forced her to take money out of both tills, and he left on foot," Lewis said.

Police have the surveillance cameras from both convenience stores.
