Police said the driver suffered serious injuries

SWEET HOME, Ore. - An 81-year-old man suffered serious injuries when his car crashed into the back of a semi-trailer that had stopped to wait for a train Thursday.

The injured driver's 2008 Chevy Impala lodged underneath the trailer of the big rig.

Firefighters pulled the Sweet Home man from the wreckage and transferred him to an air ambulance.

Police called his injuries serious but not life-threatening.

The crash happened around 1 p.m. on Highway 20 between Lebanon and Sweet Home.

Police said a commercial truck and trailer had stopped in the right westbound lane to make a righthand turn but had to wait for a train to pass first.

The driver in the Impala, also westbound, crashed into the stopped trailer for as yet unknown reasons, police said.
