CANNON BEACH, Ore. – Police releaed more details Saturday in their investigation into the first homicide in Cannon Beach in more than 50 years.
An autopsy will be conducted Sunday on the 2-year-old girl who was found dead in a hotel room on Friday, Cannon Beach police chief Jason Schermerhorn said.
The girl’s 13-year-old sister is in stable condition after surgery Friday night at Doernbecher Children’s hospital.
During a press conference Saturday afternoon, Schermerhorn described a horrifying scene in the hotel room.
“I saw a large amount of blood,” he said, adding that it all appeared to be from the 12-year-old.
Police have ruled it a homicide, the first in town in more than half a century, Schermerhorn said. Contrary to some earlier reports, the child was not cut or stabbed.
Police are still looking for the children’s mom, 40-year-old Jessica Smith of Goldendale, Wash., and her gold 2007 Chevy Suburban.
Schermerhorn said Smith is a person of interest in the case, but that police haven’t labeled her a suspect. He said the children’s father, Greg Smith, is not a suspect and has cooperated with the investigation.
Police served a search warrant at the hotel room Friday night, but wouldn’t say what they found.
Schermerhorn said police have no idea where Jessica Smith is.
“It’s wide open,” he said.
