Police: Tables turn on drunk gang members in random attack

EUGENE, Ore. - Three drunk gang members randomly attacked a couple out on an evening stroll Monday, Eugene Police said.

One of the victims pulled out a knife and stabbed one of his attackers, sending the gang members running.

When they tried to break into a home, they were confronted by the homeowner - and his shotgun.

That's the story according to police, who now have all three gang members in custody on a variety of charges.

Police got involved with a call for help at 10:48 p.m.

The investigation found that the trio were breaking into cars in the River Road area before they headed east on Stephens Drive toward the riverside bike path.

The trio encountered a 24-year-old man and 32-year-old woman returning home from a walk.

Police said the two groups didn't know each other, but that two of the gang members - Travis Gregory Brumwell, 20, and Jeffery Leon Guinn, 19 - punched the woman and started beating the man. The third gang member, 20-year-old Sharif Mohamed Gharaib, ran from the scene, police said.

The male victim pulled a knife to defend himself, repeatedly stabbing Brumwell, police said.

The stabbing sent Brumwell and Guinn running. When they tried to break into a home, the resident confronted them with a shotgun, police said.

Officers caught up with Brumwell and Guinn about 2 blocks from the attack. Brumwell is expected to survive his stab wounds. He and the male victim were taken to different hospitals for treatment, police said. Both were treated and released Monday night.

Sharif Gharaib turned himself in Tuesday morning.

Police said the three gang members face the following charges:

Travis Gregory Brumwell, 20
