Police: Suspect in custody after brush fire closes Franklin

EUGENE, Ore. -- Police have a suspect in custody after a fire closed Franklin Blvd. Thursday night near the Interstate 5 on-ramp.

Firefighters were called out to the fire at around 8 p.m. Thursday. Police re-routed eastbound  traffic on Franklin while fire crews doused the blaze.

Officials said the fire started at the base of the hillside along the road and quickly spread. Firefighters worked into the early hours of Friday morning to make sure the fire was doused.

Eugene Police Sgt. Jason Berreth said they have one person in custody, adding the person many have set the fire during a dispute.

“The brush is burned about halfway up (the hillside), it seems like the fire started near the base of the phone pole,” said Sgt. Berreth.

Police have not released the name of the suspect or what charges they're facing.
