Police: Shoplifter jumps in river, comes ashore to surrender

EUGENE, Ore. - A shoplifter jumped into the Willamette River on Thursday before coming back ashore, according to initial information from Eugene Police.

Early details indicate the man ran from a store near the University of Oregon with someone who suspected him of shoplifting in hot pursuit.

The man ran and jumped into the river near the Eugene Water and Electric Board office building.

A call for a water rescue in the Willamette near the Ferry Street Bridge went out at 1:40 p.m.

Officials said the man, who was holding onto a rock in the water, came ashore a few minutes later. Firefighters helped him up the bank.

No word yet on his identity, condition or possible criminal charges.
