People escape house fire OK but pets perish

EUGENE, Ore. - Fire destroyed a home and killed 5 pets early Wednesday morning, but all 4 human occupants got out OK.

The American Red Cross responded to assist the people displaced by the fire on Century Drive.

The fire broke out around 4:15 a.m. The cause is under investigation, but the owner of the house suspected an air conditioning unit.

Firefighters arrived on scene by 4:30 a.m. and knocked down the flames. The home appears to be a total loss.

The homeowner, his girlfriend, a tenant and her son all got out uninjured.

There are conflicting reports on how many pets perished in the fire. The homeowner told a reporter at the scene 5 pets died in the fire. The Red Cross said a dog and two cats died.
