Pellet gun in park near Thurston High prompts lockdown

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Whoever reported seeing someone with a scoped rifle in Thurston Park next to Thurston High School on Monday wasn't seeing things.

The school locked down for a half hour as a precaution while Springfield Police searched the park and surrounding area Monday, to no avail.

Officer Darin Vetter watched the park Tuesday, looking for people who matched the description he got on Monday.

Vetter saw two teenagers who matched the description and questioned them.

The teens admitted that they were in the park hunting squirrels the previous day with a pellet gun. The gun was located and documented, police said.

The boys were counseled regarding their actions and related city ordinances, police said.

Thurston High was the scene of a deadly school shooting 15 years ago.
